Rushmore Teachers Put a New Spin on What’s New

Fifth-grade teachers at Rushmore Avenue School in Carle Place are making the process of exploring current events more contemporary. Students read the latest issue of Scholastic News, a weekly publication with topics ranging from social studies to science and technology, and then have the opportunity to delve into the magazine’s online component. Most recently, the young readers played an online “Jeopardy!”-style quiz game called “Know the News” that correlates with the week’s articles.

“It is an enjoyable way to measure how much information the students have retained, rather than just perform a basic question-and-answer session,” said Rushmore Avenue fifth-grade teacher Terri Cottell. “It integrates Common Core-connected lessons with technology to make for a dynamic learning experience.” The students have recently taken a closer look at the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington (Aug. 28) and Constitution Day (Sept. 17).
