This December, members of the Carle Place High School SPARC/Interact Club, along with club adviser Kieran Morris, traveled to Holy Cross High School in Queens to participate in a group service project. While there, students were introduced to U.S. Army Sgt. Giovanni Carvajal, who served two tours in Iraq and was wounded in action.

“Sgt. Carvajal treated us to an amazingly beautiful presentation,” said student-volunteer Sabrina Feit. “His admirable acts of courage showed all in attendance that we should not take anything in our lives for granted.”

After sharing his moving personal story, Carvajal spent time speaking to individual students who thanked him and asked questions. Following the presentation, he assisted students with a service project in which Carle Place High School SPARC/Interact Club members and student volunteers from Holy Cross and Mineola high schools made entertainment gift bags for veterans. The kits, which contained socks, candy, notepads, puzzle books, pens and personal care items, will be delivered to U.S. military veterans living at the VA Hospital in St. Albans, Queens.
