On Jan. 31, kindergarten students at Cherry Lane Elementary School welcomed the Year of the Horse with their annual Lunar Day Parade and celebration. Lion and ribbon dancers, as well student marchers dressed in traditional Asian costumes, processed through the halls of their school to usher in a year of prosperity and good fortune. A student-made, colorful dragon also joined the participants in their march to scare off bad luck.

“We like to celebrate diversity here,” coordinator and Cherry Lane Elementary School kindergarten teacher Mary McDermott said of the event. “The students are just delighted by this every year and remember it for many years to come.”

After the parade students shared prepared traditional Asian foods, such as vegetable fried rice and dumplings, during individual class feasts.
