AP Scholar, National Honor Society member, ensemble singer, honors student, dedicated volunteer and leader. All of these things and more describe senior Katie Caramanica – a scholar-athlete with a 98 grade point average who represented Nassau County for balance beam at the state meet on March 1 at SUNY Brockport Rochester.

Katie, who has been involved in the sport since she was 3, is the Carle Place High School varsity gymnastics team captain as well as a district MVP, All-County, all-around and club gymnast. She is the second gymnast from the Carle Place School District to advance to the state-level competition.

“It was my goal to make the state team this year and it is a tremendous accomplishment and honor to have made it,” said Katie, who suffered a concussion earlier in the year. “I feel like I came back stronger and better than ever before.”

Katie also attributes her strong performance and success to hard work and the relationships she has developed with her peer athletes. “There is so much trust and support here in Carle Place that it’s easy to enjoy myself,” she said. “We are a family.”

“Katie is a hardworking, dedicated student and a tremendous role model for the younger gymnasts in our district,” said coach Hossy Habashzada. “She has such an amazing personality, is incredibly talented, but is also extremely humble.”

Katie has intentions to major in either kinesiology or pre-physical therapy in college next fall. She also plans to participate in club gymnastics.
