On Feb. 26, the high school AP world history, English honors and theater arts students attended an interdisciplinary field trip to see “Newsies” on Broadway with teachers Dr. Douglas Brett, Maddalena Buffalino, Susan Klat and Christa Klatsky. The musical is based on the New York City newsboy strike of 1899, a campaign led by the youth labor force.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about the historical relevance of the show through primary sources,” said Buffalino. “They learned about the evolution of child labor laws and the formation of unions.”

Additionally, students conducted research on the creation of theater productions and took an in-depth look at the components of a production including costuming, set pieces, lighting, technology, scripts and music.
