High school junior Sarah Laga was awarded the prestigious Bertie Green Junior Travel Award by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish & Portuguese. This award will provide Sarah, a member of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, with a one-week all-expense-paid trip to Spain this summer, where she will immerse herself in the culture and language she has studied so diligently.

“The application process for this award was rigorous, but Sarah’s commitment and superior skills in the study of Spanish, along with her impressive transcript and accomplishments, led to her winning this most competitive prize,” said high school world language teacher Rosa Perifimos. “Her diligence, interest, enthusiasm and work ethic are, in my opinion, the qualities that catapulted Sarah to the winner’s circle.”

As part of the application process, Sarah had to submit letters of recommendation and an original composition explaining why she deserved this prize. In addition, she submitted a CD of a conversation demonstrating her abilities in the language.

“We congratulate Sarah and wish her a memorable and productive stay in Spain,” said Perifimos.
