Members of the high school SPARC/Interact Club donated their time and talents at the Alley Pond Environmental Center in Queens on April 26. Working together with students from SPARC partner schools, including Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, Holy Cross High School in Queens and Mineola High School, the students installed mulch coverage for more than 1,000 indigenous trees. Many of the participating students had planted trees at the same location last April in an effort to replenish one section of the 600-acre forest park. The group’s efforts were part of the New York City Plant a Million Trees Project, which commemorates Arbor Day.

Cherry Lane also celebrated Mother Nature this spring with an Earth Day ceremony. Students and staff gathered together in the school’s friendship garden where principal Marilyn Manfredi spoke about ways to take care of the earth. Attendees also sang songs such as “This Land is Your Land” and “The Earth is My Mother” in honor of the planet.
