Rushmore Avenue students honored the American flag on June 11 during the school’s annual Flag Day ceremony.

After the select chorus sang the national anthem, Al Piscitelli, commander of the American Legion Post #1718, shared a story with students about a local WWII veteran.

Piscitelli followed his story by announcing the student winners of Rushmore’s annual essay contest, “What the Flag Means to Me.” Certificates and medals were awarded to Alexa Garcia (first place), Madison De Ridder (second place) and Lingfei Zhao (third place).

To round out the patriotic ceremony, third-grade students placed flags along the school’s walkway as the school band performed.
