With proud parents in attendance in the auditorium, 20 fifth- and sixth-graders at Rushmore Avenue School were inducted into the school’s 2018-19 Student Council. Carle Place Superintendent of Schools David Flatley joined advisers Elizabeth Cottell and Julie Santoro in administering the oath of service to the school’s newest leaders. Mr. Flatley and Rushmore Ave. Principal Catherine Silletti then presented each inductee with a customary student council pin.

According to Ms. Silletti, serving on Student Council helps bring to life the sense of community that is being established in school.

“These are your first steps in public service…and hopefully they will not be your last,” said Ms. Silletti, as she congratulated the new inductees.

Rushmore’s Student Council organizes various charitable activities throughout the year, including a food drive, an ALS fundraiser and a holiday toy drive. This year’s group is comprised of representatives from each of the fifth- and sixth-grade classes who represent the interests of the entire school. To be chosen, each candidate must write a speech explaining why he or she can be relied on as the voice of the Rushmore student body.
