Rohan Murphy, a nationally recognized youth speaker who has spoken in over 40 states, recently stopped by Carle Place Middle/High School to speak with students about the power of perseverance and overcoming obstacles, including circumstances that can be debilitating if not met with the right attitude.

Mr. Murphy lost both of his legs at a young age and began wrestling in his freshman year of high school. He went on to wrestle at Penn State University and later made a name for himself as an accomplished power lifter, representing the United States in international competitions throughout the world. He stopped by the school to speak with middle and high school students, stressing three very important themes: intrinsic motivation, inclusion not exclusion and perseverance.

“If I can do it with no legs, what’s your excuse”? Mr. Murphy asked rhetorically. He also met with parents during an evening presentation, where he provided them with strategies for motivating their children to achieve their absolute best.

Director of Guidance Dr. Joy-Anne D’Anca and guidance counselor Robert Santoro have been working with other members of the guidance department to bring in dynamic presenters to educate students as well as their families. Together they have provided the Carle Place community with some amazing, inspirational people that make life-changing impacts on both students and their families. The department looks forward to future presenters and will invite Mr. Murphy back to speak with the next group of Carle Place students.
