Representatives from the Town of North Hempstead visited students at Cherry Lane for a presentation on how to protect the environment. During the presentation, the topics of natural resources, conservation, composting and pollution were discussed.

“The Town of North Hempstead is committed to doing all we can to preserve and protect the environment,” said Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “Through our environmental initiatives, such as school recycling and water conservation education, we hope to teach and encourage residents to reduce, reuse and recycle.”

Students were also familiarized with curriculum-based vocabulary words including Earth, litter, smog, toxic, decompose, dumpster, landfill, decayed, oxygen and carpool.

“It is great to have our local representatives reinforce how important it is for everyone to help to keep our community clean,” said teacher Barbara Kellman. “Coincidently, kindergarten students are studying the Common Core anthology topic of ‘Taking Care of the Earth,’ so this presentation was most definitely appropriate and timely.”
At the end of the presentation, each child received a recycled, reusable bag.
