On Jan. 29, the Carle Place School District will host its third annual Parent University, a free event open to all Carle Place residents. This year’s courses were created with feedback from Carle Place students; over 400 students responded to a survey about what they want their parents to learn.
The evening will offer families valuable information, resources and practical strategies to support parental health and well-being while strengthening students’ academic, social and emotional success.
Parent University is designed to ignite parent engagement and build strong connections between home, school and the community. The program empowers families with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to navigate parenting in the 21st century, boost parent involvement in their children’s education and support both academic and personal growth. The event also emphasizes collaboration around strategies that promote children’s and families’ physical and mental well-being.
The evening will begin with a plenary session led by Dr. Tia Albig, a highly regarded Nassau County middle school teacher, a student and parent coach, and K-12 professional developer. Her presentation, “Beyond ‘I Dunno’: Helping Kids Open Up and Connect with Purposeful Talk,” will offer practical strategies for creating meaningful conversations with children, encouraging deeper thinking and making moments of connection and joy.
Following the plenary session, parents may select two of nine breakout presentations covering a wide range of topics, including safely navigating artificial intelligence, self-care, managing stress, the college application process and work-based learning experiences. Sessions were developed in collaboration with the Carle Place School District, Carle Place PTA and SEPTA, the Carle Place Teachers Association, the Carle Place Civic Association and other community partners, reflecting a shared commitment to supporting families and student success.
