Students at Carle Place’s Cherry Lane School celebrated Read Across America Week during the week of March 2 with a variety of literacy-focused activities designed to promote a love of reading.
Throughout the week, students participated in engaging classroom activities, including Heart Word Bingo, which helped strengthen their recognition of high-frequency words while encouraging collaboration and fun among classmates. Students also took part in a special Career Day, where they learned about a range of professions and listened to books highlighting careers such as police officers, dentists, bakers and air traffic controllers.
The celebration also included a schoolwide parade, during which students carried their favorite books and shared their enthusiasm for reading. The week concluded with a Read-a-Thon, giving students time to relax with a book and enjoy reading together.
“Read Across America Week was a fantastic week filled with learning, laughter and a love of books,” said Cherry Lane reading teacher and Read Across America Week organizer Hayley DesRuisseaux. “It was great to see our students building their literacy skills while spreading the joy of reading” added fellow reading teacher and organizer Danielle Emmel.
