As a culminating activity for their first Project Based Learning unit, second graders at Carle Place’s Cherry Lane School put their learning into practice by baking zucchini bread.

Throughout the experience, students explored the states of matter and investigated how heating and cooling leads to physical and chemical changes. They also reflected on the process through a writing activity with the help of their instructional coach and made connections between their hands-on learning and written expression.

In addition, students had the opportunity to explore the school kitchens, learn about kitchen safety and discover the connection between science and cooking.

The activity provided a meaningful opportunity for second graders to apply their scientific knowledge, collaborate and celebrate their learning, with the finished zucchini bread earning plenty of positive reviews.
