Carle Place students from Cherry Lane School recently celebrated the special people in their community during the school’s annual “Characters of Carle Place” event. Coordinated by ENL teacher Nicole Santos, “Characters of Carle Place” invites professionals from around Carle Place to the school to read to students and speak about their important roles in the community.

Various community helpers were invited to Cherry Lane School to read a short book about feelings to a class and then speak about their career. Readers included an actor, bakers, a dentist, doctor, EMT, firefighters, lawyer, a Marine, nurse, police officers, realtor and Cherry Lane’s school social worker.

Classes heard one of four different books. These included “The Color Monster” by Anna Llenas, “In My Heart: A Book of Feelings” by Jo Witek, “Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun: Having the Courage to be Who You Are” by Maria Dismondy and “The Way I Feel” by Janan Cain. Each of the stories aligned with the district’s mental health standards.

Following the reading, each class learned more about their visitor as they asked questions about their important work. It was a memorable day for the entire Cherry Lane school community.
